Take Action: Support $75M for Afterschool & Summer Programs

The Michigan Afterschool Partnership (MASP) invites organizations across the state to sign on in support of a $75 million investment in out-of-school time (OST) programming in the FY2026 state budget. This letter urges legislators to prioritize funding that ensures more youth have access to safe, enriching before-school, afterschool, and summer programs. By adding your name, you’re joining a broad coalition advocating for Michigan’s youth, working families, and future workforce. Help us send a strong message: every child deserves access to opportunities that help them thrive.

Dear Members of the Michigan Legislature,

We, the undersigned organizations, strongly urge you to support $75 million investment in out-of-school time (OST) programming for school-age children and youth. This is more than a funding request—it's a commitment to Michigan’s youth, working families, and future workforce.

High-quality OST programs boost academic achievement, support working parents, and contribute to stronger communities. In FY2025, the state’s $57 million investment in competitive grants for before, afterschool and summer programming helped nearly 57,000 youth access enriching experiences at 733 programs across Michigan, offering everything from STEM and literacy enrichment to meals, mentoring, career exploration, and much more.

Despite this progress, demand far exceeds supply. More than 751,000 Michigan children still lack access to these vital programs. Families cite cost, transportation, and limited availability as key barriers. In FY2025 alone, OST providers requested $122 million—more than double the $57 million—highlighting the urgency of increased support.

These programs deliver a strong return on investment. They improve school attendance and academic performance, reduce risky behaviors, and give families peace of mind. Moreover, 81% of Michigan parents say that access to afterschool programs helps them keep their jobs—benefiting both family stability and the economy.

To meet growing demand and ensure every child has access to safe, enriching opportunities beyond the school day, we respectfully request that you prioritize a $75 million investment in OST programming in the FY2026 budget. This funding will build on proven success and expand access to more youth across the state.

Thank you for your continued leadership and commitment to Michigan’s youth.

Sincerely,
