Governor Gretchen Whitmer has proclaimed October 23, 2025, as Lights On Afterschool Day in Michigan, joining communities nationwide in celebrating the essential role of afterschool programs in helping young people learn, grow, and thrive.
Lights On Afterschool is a national celebration recognizing the power of afterschool programs to keep youth safe, support working families, and build stronger communities. In Michigan, the need and impact are clear. According to the 2025 America After 3PM report, 86 percent of parents say afterschool programs help their children build social skills and make responsible decisions, while 87 percent say they encourage fun and learning that reduces screen time. Yet, for every child enrolled in a Michigan afterschool program, five more would participate if one were available.
Governor Whitmer’s proclamation honors the dedication of afterschool professionals and partners who keep the lights on for Michigan youth. It also reaffirms the state’s commitment to investing in afterschool opportunities, reflected in Michigan’s $75 million allocation for out-of-school time programs in Fiscal Year 2026.
As programs, youth, and communities across Michigan flip the switch for Lights On Afterschool, we celebrate the creativity, resilience, and potential of every young person and the shared belief that when youth have access to quality afterschool programs, everyone benefits.
